THERE WAS BAD NEWS WAITING for Abel when he got home, though it looked exactly like his sister.

“Lina!” He ran to her when he saw her on the couch, almost knocking her over with his hug.

“Sweet sulfur skies, you stink!” She shoved him off and squeezed her nose dramatically.

“You’re okay!” he cheered. Which, of course, she knew already. He glanced at his parents, both sitting on chairs opposite Lina. They looked stricken, and not by his smell. “What happened?” he asked.

Sax hadn’t been happy to lose to the Thunder Wings. Maybe he took it out on Abel’s family. But they’d won the battle and the Red Talons had to forgive Lina. That was the bet! Abel wanted to tell her about it, how he’d helped save her.

“Did the Red Talons go away?” he asked. “Did you go to the Half-Wing? They said by tomorrow! Are you really a—”

“Calm down, Abel,” his father said.

“Why don’t you shower?” his mother suggested. “After that, you can tell us all about your day with your teacher.”

“But I—”

“Shower. Now.” His mother was not negotiating.
